Role of the Treasurer

Duties of the Treasurer of the Society for Birth Defects Research and Prevention

  • Participate in Council teleconferences and meetings and any Strategic Planning meetings that occur during term.
  • Represent the Finance Committee during Council discussions involving Society finances as well as any projects/programs that impact Society finances.
  • Participate in an annual teleconference, and other communications as needed, with the Society's investment manager.
  • Review the draft Operating Budget prepared by staff in October/November and chair a teleconference of the Finance Committee prior to Council review of the draft Operating Budget (November).
  • Receive via email and review a set of monthly financial reports sent to the Treasurer and President by the Executive Director.
  • Receive, review, and share with Council the annual Financial Review or Audit prepared by an independent accounting firm.
  • Authorize filing of Form 990 annually with Internal Revenue Service.
  • Present the Treasurers Report at the Annual Business Meeting.
  • Oversee payment of budgeted operational expenses. Receive, sign, and return, by mail or electronically, checks requiring the Treasurer's signature, and review check registers of other payments made by staff on the Society's behalf.
  • Approve, along with President and the Council, any large unbudgeted expenses outside of the approved Operating Budget.
  • Co-Chair the Annual Meeting Sponsorship Workgroup with the Vice President.
