Annual Meeting Awards and Lectures
Edward W. Carney Distinguished Service Award
This award honors Edward W. Carney, Past President of the Society for Birth Defects Research and Prevention, for his exemplary dedication and service to the Society and the field of research on birth defects and/or disorders of reproductive or developmental origin, or a related discipline. The Edward W. Carney Distinguished Service Award will recognize an individual who has provided distinguished service to The Society for Birth Defects Research and Prevention.
F. Clarke Fraser New Investigator Award
This award honors F. Clarke Fraser, one of the founding members of the Society for Birth Defects Research and Prevention, for his many contributions to the field of developmental toxicology. The award is presented during the annual meeting of the Society for Birth Defects Research and Prevention. The awardee will give a presentation related to his/her research. It is intended that the presentation will serve as a demonstration to pre- and postdoctoral students of the development of an independent career in research on birth defects and/or disorders of reproductive or developmental origin, or a related discipline.
Patricia Rodier Mid-Career Award in Research and Mentoring
This award honors the legacy of Dr. Patricia Rodier, a past President of the Developmental Neurotoxicology Society and a past Council member of the Society for Birth Defects Research and Prevention. The purpose of the award is to recognize a mid-career individual who has demonstrated a successful, independent research career and a track record of mentorship. The award is presented in a joint session during the concurrent annual meetings of BDRP and DNTS. The awardee will give a presentation related to his/her research that is intended to serve as a demonstration of independent mid-career research in a field relevant to BDRP and DNTS.
Society for Birth Defects Research and Prevention Innovator Award
This award recognizes innovative and translational research at the intersection of at least two of the following areas: basic science, new technologies, clinical research, policy, and outreach. The award is presented during the Annual Meeting of the Society for Birth Defects Research and Prevention. The finalists (senior authors or their designees) for the award will give platform presentations on their research. It is intended that the presentations will serve as a demonstration of cutting edge developmental/birth defects research.
James G. Wilson Publication Award
This award honors James G. Wilson, one of the founding members of the Society for Birth Defects Research and Prevention and is presented in recognition of the best paper published in the journal Birth Defects Research during the prior year. The dual purpose of the award is to provide recognition to the author(s) of the best paper and to encourage authors trained in various disciplines to submit high-quality papers to Birth Defects Research.
Josef Warkany Lecturer
This annual award is presented in recognition of the best paper accepted or published in the journal Birth Defects Research. The dual purpose of the award is to provide recognition to the authors of the best paper and to encourage authors trained in various disciplines to submit high-quality papers to Birth Defects Research. The essence of the winning publication will be presented and discussed by the primary author at the annual meeting of the Society for Birth Defects Research and Prevention. Mrs. James G. Wilson is a tireless supporter of the Society for Birth Defects Research and Prevention, and through the James G. Wilson Foundation has provided the generous resources for this prestigious award.
Robert L. Brent Lecture
This lecture is presented to facilitate the discussion of new and old teratogens as well as new and emerging topics in research on birth defects and/or disorders of reproductive or developmental origin, or a related discipline, during the annual meeting. The lecturer and the lecture topic are selected by the Program Chair/Program Committee.
Narsingh Agnish Fellowship
This Fellowship was established to recognize Dr. Narsingh Agnish's contributions to the Society for Birth Defects Research and Prevention, and particularly to the implementation of the Education Course. The fellowship is awarded to a long-standing member of the Society for Birth Defects Research and Prevention late in their career who has made a major contribution to education in the field of research on birth defects and/or disorders of reproductive or developmental origin, or a related discipline. The Fellow shall be selected by the Education Committee of the Society for Birth Defects Research and Prevention.
BDRP and ETS Exchange Lecture
The annual Society for Birth Defects Research and Prevention (BDRP) and European Teratology Society (ETS) Exchange Lecture provides an opportunity for both societies to share and compare perspectives on a selected topic. Established in 2009, the Exchange Lecture encourages friendly debate and spirited discussion. Each year, it is presented at both societies' annual meetings.
Trainee Travel Awards
Each year, the Society for Birth Defects Research and Prevention provides Travel Awards to help graduate students and postdoctoral fellows offset the cost of attending the Annual Meeting. Eligible applicants must be Society members, have an abstract accepted for presentation, and present their research at the meeting as either a platform or a poster presentation.
Travel Award applications are due February 22. Please make sure to submit your abstract by the February 15 deadline and then submit a Travel Award application by February 22.
Edward W. Carney Trainee Award
The goal of the Edward W. Carney Trainee Award Fund is to encourage education and training in reproductive and developmental toxicology. The fund will be used to support graduate student or postdoctoral scholar travel to meetings that offer significant educational opportunities in the field of Reproductive and Developmental Toxicology, such as the annual meetings of the Society of Toxicology (SOT) and the Society for Birth Defects Research and Prevention (BDRP).

Wilson Presentation Award
The Wilson Presentation Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Fellow Finalists Platform Session 1 showcases the work of eight students and postdoctoral fellows. Participants in this session are chosen by the Student Affairs Committee in recognition of the quality and significance of their work. The two top-rated presentations, as determined by the judges, will each receive the Wilson Presentation Award, named in honor of founding member James G. Wilson. Marie W. Taubeneck Award
This trainee award is presented in recognition of scholarship in research on birth defects and disorders of developmental origin and service to the Society for Birth Defects Research and Prevention (BDRP) and includes a cash prize. The Marie W. Taubeneck Fund, established in memory of Dr. Taubeneck, supports this award. Applications are due May 15.
James C. Bradford Memorial Student Poster Award
The James C. Bradford Memorial Student Poster Award is sponsored by the Middle Atlantic Reproduction and Teratology Association (MARTA). This award recognizes the best poster presentation by a student or postdoctoral fellow at the Annual Meetings of BDRP and DNTS.
